Working in a session

Shift+Tab cycles through the modes, shown under the prompt:

  • Manual: Forge asks before editing files or running commands.
  • Accept edits: file edits go through; commands still ask.
  • Plan: Forge researches and proposes a plan without changing anything.
  • Auto: a classifier model approves low-risk tool calls and blocks risky ones. Tune it with /auto-mode-setup.

/permissions manages allow and deny rules, such as Bash(npm test).

Every prompt is a checkpoint. Press Esc twice, or run /rewind, to restore the code, the conversation, or both. You can also summarize everything before or after a checkpoint to free up context.

  • /fork <task> and /subtask <task> start a subagent that inherits the conversation.
  • /loop 5m <prompt> repeats a prompt while the session is open.
  • /schedule 1d <prompt> runs on this machine through forge daemon start. /schedule cloud 1d <prompt> runs on Forge Cloud even when your machine is off.
  • /background moves the session to a detached process; forge logs shows its output.
  • /tasks lists everything that is running.

/goal <condition> makes Forge keep working until the condition is met. It checks after each turn, for up to five extra rounds.
